NAN HUA SEC TO BE ACCORDED AUTONOMOUS SCHOOL STATUS FROM 2006

The Ministry of Education will accord Nan Hua Secondary School the Autonomous School status from January 2006. After a stringent selection process, Nan Hua Secondary School has been found to have met the selection criteria that comprise the following broad areas:

·         A well-rounded education programme and a good system in place to achieve the Desired Outcomes of Education[1];

·         Consistently attained good achievements in academic and other results;

·         Is well regarded and enjoys strong parental support and public recognition.

Background

2.           Autonomous Schools were established in 1994 to provide pupils with quality education within the framework of a non-independent status, but with greater autonomy devolved to the schools. Autonomous Schools present parents with more options in the choice of quality schools for their children.

3.           Autonomous Schools are given additional funding ($300 per pupil per year) and flexibility to develop a holistic education that stretches each pupil to his fullest potential. Students from Autonomous Schools thus benefit from better facilities, a more innovative curriculum, as well as a more varied range of enrichment programmes.

4.           There are currently 25 Autonomous Schools. The list is at Annex.
