ONLINE BUSINESS LICENSING SERVICE (OBLS) ALLOWS 80% OF ALL START-UPS TO APPLY FOR THE LICENCES NEEDED TO START THEIR BUSINESSES

69 licences from 19 Government agencies can now be applied online through the Online Business Licensing Service – OBLS (accessible via http://www.business.gov.sg/licences). It allows 80% of all start-ups, or close to 30,000 businesses annually, to apply for the licences needed to start their businesses without resorting to offline means. For instance, businesses in the Public Entertainment, Education, Import and Export, Food & Beverage and Telecommunications sectors will be able to apply for the necessary licences through this one-stop e-Service.

The OBLS seeks to provide a one-stop convenience for businesses operating in Singapore by reducing the burden and hassle that they face in obtaining licences. It was launched in January 2004 with 20 licences available for online application. To date, more than 4,000 online applications have been made.

Using the OBLS, businesses would only need to fill in one single form to apply for multiple licences, instead of a series of forms. A consolidated payment mechanism allows for one-time payment for multiple licence fees, eliminating the need to make separate payments. In addition, businesses are provided with a comprehensive list of regulatory requirements which match the licences needed for their business activities. With these features, the OBLS enables businesses to enjoy time and cost savings when transacting with the Government agencies from their desktops, anytime and anywhere.

As a natural extension to the online application service, the OBLS would soon allow businesses to update, renew and terminate their licence applications online as well. Throughout the entire business licensing cycle, businesses would only need to access a single portal to meet all their licensing needs in future.
