THE SPECIAL ACADEMIC AWARDS 2004

54 awards will be presented to students at the 2004 Special Academic Awards Presentation Ceremony on 24 August 2004. These awards include the Prime Minister's Book Prize, the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science, the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Outstanding Normal Course Students and the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship To Encourage Upgrading (LKY-STEP award). The Guest-of-Honour for the ceremony, Mr Chan Soo Sen, Minister of State, Ministry of Education, will be presenting the awards.

 

 

The Prime Minister’s Book Prize

 

2.                    The Prime Minister’s Book Prize is an annual award for bilingualism given at the primary, secondary and pre-university levels. This year, 27 students are awarded the Prime Minister's Book Prize. 10 are in the Primary section, 12 in the Secondary section and 5 in the Pre-University section. The names of the awardees are given in Annex A.         

3.                    Two students, Lin Qinghui and Tan Haihan, are receiving both the Prime Minister’s Book Prize and the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science in the Secondary and Pre-University category respectively.

 

 

The Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science

 

4.                    The Lee Kuan Yew Award for excellence in Mathematics and Science was instituted in 1992.  The awards are given under three categories - Secondary, Pre-University and Polytechnic. This year, of the 17 recipients, 7 are in the Secondary category, 6 in the Pre-University category and 4 in the Polytechnic category. The names of the awardees are given in Annex B.   

5.                    Soh Ying Qi Shirleen, who received the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science in the Secondary category in 2002, is receiving the award for the second time. She will be receiving the award in the Pre-University category.            

6.                    Wang Jiun Haur, also a winner in the Pre-University category, received the Prime Minister’s Book Prize in the Secondary category in 2002.    

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Lee Kuan Yew Award for Outstanding Normal Course Students

 

7.                    The Lee Kuan Yew Award for Outstanding Normal Course Students is presented for the first time this year. This award recognises students in the Normal Academic (NA) and Normal Technical (NT) course for their academic achievements, and encourages them to continue to do well. A total of 4 awards are given out to the 2 top students in each course based on their ‘N’ level examination results, i.e. 2 awards for NA students and 2 awards for NT students. The names of the awardees are given in Annex C.

8.                    Choo Li Chin Lily, a winner in the Normal Academic category, is a well-respected peer tutor who won the admiration of her Mathematics tutors. She was also a recipient of the Edusave Scholarship from 2000 to 2003 and numerous other awards given by her school. She was the Top Pupil in the Normal Academic course after scoring six A1s and one A2 in the 2003 GCE ‘N’ Level Examination.

 

9.                    Saiyidah Bte Tauhid, a winner in the Normal Academic category, performed excellently in the 2003 GCE ‘N’ Level Examination to emerge as the Top Malay Pupil.

 

10.                Ang Jin Hui, a winner in the Normal Technical category, held the rank of Staff Sergeant in the National Police Cadet Corp in 2003. He was also the recipient of a Bronze Medal in the National Youth Achievement Award, and held the post of Chairman of the Disciplinary Board of the Student Council – leading students from four different streams in the school (Special, Express, Normal Academic and Normal Technical).

 

11.                Seetoh Chan An, a winner in the Normal Technical category, was the joint-Top Pupil in the 2003 GCE ‘N’ Level Examination, together with Ang Jin Hui. He showed independence, drive and maturity to achieve A1 in both Mathematics and Design and Technology.

 

 

The Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading (LKY-STEP Award)

 

12.                The Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading (LKY-STEP Award) was presented for the first time in 2001. This year, a total of 6 LKY-STEP awards will be presented, 4 to outstanding Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduates pursuing full-time studies at our polytechnics, and 2 to outstanding polytechnic graduates pursuing full-time undergraduate studies at our universities. The names of the awardees are given in Annex D.   

13.                Serene Yeo Shui Ling, a winner in the ITE category, struggled for four dark years after her GCE ‘O’ levels before deciding on enrolling in ITE. She thrived as a natural leader and motivated student, and now intends to work and study for a part-time computer engineering course at the National University of Singapore. In time, she intends to return to ITE as a lecturer.

 

14.                Tay Chee Yong, a winner in the Polytechnic category, had to overcome the daunting challenge of taking the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination as a private candidate, never having completed his primary school education. He scored distinctions in all the subjects he took at the examination, and garnered an impressive array of awards, including the Jurong Shipyard Gold Medal, Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry Prize and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore, Prize.

 

 

 

The Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence (New)          

 

15.                A new award, the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence in both academic and non-academic areas, will be launched in 2005. This award, issued at the end of secondary education, is to recognise well-rounded students who have excelled in both academic and non-academic spheres, and who exemplify the qualities articulated in our desired outcomes of education. A total of 8 awards will be given out to students who complete secondary education in each course every year; i.e. 4 awards for Express students, and 4 for Normal Course students (comprising 2 for Normal Academic and 2 for Normal Technical). The award will be funded by the LKY Donation account of the Education Fund. A brief of the new award is given in Annex E.

THE LEE KUAN YEW AWARD FOR ALL-ROUND EXCELLENCE

 

 

Origin and Funding

 

The introduction of a new national-level award for all-round excellence at the end of secondary education is to recognise well-rounded students who have excelled in both academic and non-academic spheres, and who exemplify the qualities articulated in our desired outcomes of education. The award reflects our educational objective of developing well-rounded students.

 

The LKY Award for All-Round Excellence will be financed from the LKY Donation account of the Education Fund. 

 

Number and Quantum of Awards

 

A total of 8 awards will be given out to students who complete secondary education at each stream every year: 4 for Express students, and 4 for Normal course students (comprising 2 for Normal Academic and 2 for Normal Technical)

 

The recipients will be awarded $600 each.   

 

Selection of Award Winners

 

Top candidates will be selected according to their performance at academic examinations, Co-Curricular Activities record, their positive character, and through an interview.
