2004 INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY OLYMPIADS

PERFORMANCE AT THE 2004 INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY OLYMPIADS

 

1.                  The Ministry of Education would like to congratulate the Singapore students who have won medals at two International Olympiads held in July 2004 – the 35th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the 36th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).

 

35th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)

 

2.         The 35th IPhO was held in Pohang, South Korea, from 15 to 23 July 2004. All five students who represented Singapore received awards in a field of 332 student participants from 73 countries.

 

3.         The two Silver medallists are Lim Yu Xian and Tan Liangzheng of Raffles Junior College. The Bronze medallist is Andy Wong Wing Chung, also of Raffles Junior College. Amos Goh Kian Khoon of Anglo-Chinese Junior College and Leong Zhidong of Hwa Chong Junior College received Honourable Mention awards.

 

4.         The delegation leaders were Dr Kwek Leong Chuan from the National Institute of Education, Mr Cheng San Shian from Temasek Junior College and Mr Lim Yeow Heng from St Andrew’s Junior College.

 

36th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)

 

5.         The 36th IChO was held in Kiel, Germany, from 18 to 27 July 2004. All four students who represented Singapore received awards in a field of 234 student participants from 65 countries.

 

6.                  The two Silver medallists are Beh Yee Ming Leslie and Ng Yao Zong of Raffles Junior College. The two Bronze medallists are Xie Shengxiang, also of Raffles Junior College, and Seh Zhi Wei of Victoria Junior College.

 

7.           The delegation leaders were Dr Tan Choon Hong and Dr Szeto Ka Fai Alan                    from the National University of Singapore, and Ms Goh Bee Lian from Temasek Junior College.

 

8.                  Our students' participation in the International Olympiads is a joint effort between the Ministry of Education and the following organisations:

 

·              Institute of Physics, Singapore;

 

·              Singapore National Institute of Chemistry;

 

·              National University of Singapore; and

 

·              National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
