Indonesia’s Growing Automotive Sector Draws Singapore Manufacturing Companies

1 March 2004

MR_009/04

  1. Indonesia’s automotive industry is going places. Developing from a playing field dominated by several small business groups in the 1970s, Indonesia is today a key automotive hub in Southeast Asia comprising 26 manufacturers and distributors, producing some 216,000 vehicles as of last year.
  2. Coupled with the continual growth of Indonesia’s economy and her geographical proximity with Singapore, local companies are exploring this market as a potential source of business opportunities. Indonesia’s automotive production more than doubled in 1999 and 2000. In terms of import and export volume and value, a growth of 204% was witnessed in 2001.
  3. 24 Singapore-based companies have headed off on an Automotive Electronics Parts & Components Industry Cluster Mission to Jakarta organised by IE Singapore, taking place from 1 to 5 March 2004. This was a follow-up to a hugely successful seminar focusing on opportunities in Indonesia’s automotive industry, held in October 2003, which saw participation by 90 seminar delegates from 72 companies. Most of these 21 companies are already servicing, or possess the capabilities to seek greater involvement in the automotive sector. (Please see Annex 1 for list of mission participants)
  4. The mission aims to increase the visibility of Singapore companies among Indonesia’s automotive community, identify market potential for partnerships and better understand Indonesia’s automotive industry. The itinerary includes visits and meetings with key automotive OEMs and 1st tier automotive parts manufacturers such as PT ASTRA Otoparts, PT Hyundai Motor, amongst others. (Please see Annex 2 for mission programme).
  5. IE Singapore’s bid to engage Singapore-based manufacturing companies in the global automotive arena has seen a series of business missions to key automotive hubs such as Australia, Thailand, China and Germany in recent months.
