News Release on the HT Uniformed Scholarships Presentation Ceremony

 

Home Team Uniformed Services Scholarships –

First awards for overseas studies

 

The Home Team will, for the first time, be awarding the Singapore Government Scholarship (Home Team Uniformed Services) to promising students to pursue undergraduate studies in overseas universities. This is in addition to the Local Merit Scholarships that the Home Team has been offering to talented and promising individuals who wish to join the Home Team Uniformed Services (HUS) to play a part in ensuring the continued safety and security of Singapore.

Scholars on both scholarships will, upon graduation, be offered careers as Senior Officers in the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Prisons Department or in the Central Narcotics Bureau.

The successful applicants - 3 Singapore Government Scholars (HUS) and 7 Local Merit Scholars (HUS) - will receive awards from the Minister for Home Affairs Mr Wong Kan Seng. The ceremony will be held at the Function Room of New Phoenix Park, Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday19 July 2003, 10 am.

Singapore Government Scholars (HUS)

The Singapore Government Scholarship (HUS) will be given to three successful applicants:

    1. Ms Weng Wanyi from Raffles Junior College, will read history in the London School of Economics and Political Science, and will upon graduation, serve in the Singapore Police Force.
    2. Mr Png Yan Da from Pioneer Junior College, will study Chemical Engineering in Imperial College, and will upon graduation, serve in the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
    3. Mr Justin Wong Xing Shun from Victoria Junior College, will major in biochemistry in the University College of London, and will upon graduation, serve in the Singapore Police Force.

The three scholars will leave for overseas studies in the United Kingdom in September.

 Local Merit Scholars (HUS)

Local Merit Scholarships (HUS) will be awarded to the following seven scholars who will be studying in the National University of Singapore (NUS):

    Upon graduation, Ms Ng Kailin will serve in the Prisons Department while Mr Yee De Biao will serve in the Singapore Civil Defence Force. The other Local Merit scholars will serve in the Singapore Police Force.
