His Excellency Seyed Mohammad Khatami
President of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Excellency,
I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Laleh and Ladan Bijani on 8 July 2003 at the Raffles Hospital.
They knew that the operation was highly risky, yet they wanted to go through with it in order to fulfil their hope of being separated. They faced the challenge with remarkable fortitude, optimism and cheerfulness. Throughout, Laleh and Ladan have been a source of inspiration to others around them.
The multi-national medical team in Raffles Hospital did their best to fulfil the dream of Laleh and Ladan to live their lives as two separate individuals. It is with deep regret that their dream could not be realised.
On behalf of the people and Government of Singapore, I would like to extend to the Iranian people and the family of Laleh and Ladan our heartfelt condolences. The people of Singapore share their loss.
S R NATHAN
