PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE MOVES INTO ITS FOURTH YEAR

- PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE 2003 : "A GIVING PEOPLE, A CARING NATION"

The President’s Challenge 2003 (PC 2003) will be held from 29 August to 14 September 2003. This year marks the fourth year of the Challenge, which was initiated by President S R Nathan in 2000 to increase awareness about how the community can get involved in helping the less fortunate and to raise funds for the social service sector.

President’s Challenge 2003 will see several "firsts" this year. The public can make direct donations more easily - via the Telepoll line at 1900-112 1008, or going online to make an e-donation via credit card or direct debit, with double tax exemption automatically processed. Putting yet another high tech twist into the Challenge this year is the use of EZ-Link cards to donate. Cardholders simply need to tap their EZ-link cards at the QB donation kiosks for small sum donations of $1, $2 or $5 to the Challenge.

Other "firsts" in this year’s President’s Challenge include the PC Exhibition to be launched on the evening of 17 Jun 2003 and which will travel to various public venues with volunteer PC Ambassadors in a public education effort to help focus attention on the many needs around us. There will also be a mini-concert performance centred on a poem commissioned for President’s Challenge 2003 and donated by well-known poet and writer, Desmond Sim.

In addition, the list of organisations participating and supporting the Challenge has grown, in tandem with the more varied and diverse events and activities under PC 2003. The list of events and activities under this year’s President’s Challenge is enclosed.

Chairman President’s Challenge 2003 Steering Committee, Ms Lim Soo Hoon, said: "We are currently facing rather trying times and as a result there are many sectors needing help. Singaporeans are generally warm-hearted people. They never fail to show that they care when they know there are people crying out for help. I hope they will once again rise to the occasion to strongly support President’s Challenge 2003".

On this year’s President’s Challenge, President S R Nathan has urged all Singaporeans: "Let us all contribute in whatever ways we can to this year’s President’s Challenge. Let us bring a message of cheer and hope to those who look to us in these times of anxiety and uncertainty."

This year, a total of 45 beneficiaries will benefit from all the fund-raising and volunteer efforts. The list of beneficiaries is also enclosed.

Press statement

QB extends EZ-Link Card usage in Singapore at the President’s Challenge 2003

Singapore, 17 June 2003 Come 1 August 2003, tapping the ubiquitous ez-link card will have a new meaning as it will also be a revolutionary way to contribute to the President’s Challenge.

The QB Tap & Give – President’s Challenge 2003 programme aims to raise funds for the President’s Challenge via specially-constructed QB Tap & Give Kiosks. Every tap of the ez-link card will contribute a $1, $2 or $5 donation to the President’s Challenge. The QB Tap & Give – President’s Challenge 2003 programme will end on 15 September 2003.

QB Tap & Give Kiosks will be prominently located at four Centrepoint Properties’ shopping malls, mainly Centrepoint Shopping Centre, Causeway Point, Northpoint and Compass Point. Singaporeans will also be able to ‘tap’ their ez-link cards and ‘give’ back to community at Raffles Place, City Hall and Orchard MRT Stations. Special mobile QB Tap & Give Kiosks will also be placed at the President’s Challenge roadshows and fringe activities.

The QB Tap & Give – President’s Challenge 2003 programme and its special QB Tap & Give Kiosks will be officially launched on 31 July 2003. (Note to the editor: Your coverage of this event will be deeply appreciated.)

A special QB Tap & Give Day has been planned on 2 August 2003 where volunteers will give away special gifts and freebies at Orchard Road to encourage Singaporeans to ‘tap’ for a good cause.

Ms Norma Sit, CEO of QB, said: "Almost everyone in Singapore today has an ez-link card. QB is the exclusive partner to EZ-Link Pte Ltd for branding, non-transit payment and loyalty applications. QB was appointed to exploit the potential of extending the use of the ez-link card to non-transit environments. The QB Tap & Give Kiosks will allow anyone to donate easily to the President’s Challenge with simple taps of the card each time he or she shops or travels. We believe that Singaporeans will use this simple method to show that they care for those less fortunate in our community.

Mr Nicholas Lee, Senior Vice President of EZ-Link Pte Ltd, states, "Today, the ez-link card has the highest wallet penetration in Singapore and is the most frequently used card by the average Singaporeans who use it for their daily domestic transit purposes. The QB Tap & Give programme is an innovative way to show care through donations to recognised community funds and is also an excellent platform to showcase alternative uses of the ez-link card.’

The ez-link card, based on the contactless smart card technology, is a versatile transactional card that will eventually be used for practically all types of payment at merchant shops, restaurants and entertainment outlets. There are currently about 4.5-million ez-link cards in circulation in Singapore. The QB Tap & Give President’s Challenge 2003 Programme will be a positive demonstration of how the ez-link card can be used beyond transit purposes.

The QB Tap & Give – President’s Challenge 2003 programme is brought to you by QB and friends: BenQ, Centrepoint Properties Ltd, EZ-Link Pte Ltd, Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, Safra Radio, SBS Transit Ltd, Singapore MRT Ltd and Transit Link Pte Ltd.

– Corporate Profile –

QB Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Green Dot Payment Services (GDPS), member of Singapore Technologies, was established in September 2002 to promote and extend the usage of the ez-link card beyond transit payment purposes in Singapore.

The QB logo comprises of the letters QB on a green round shape background. The letters QB in small alphabets represent key pairs, which is an inherent security feature of smart card payments. The letters in close proximity also represent the complementary and close partnership between QB and stakeholders, including EZ-Link, banks and financial institutions, merchants and cardholders. The round shape symbolises a coin, one of the earliest notation of money. The circle shape also represents completeness or end-to-end solutioning by QB to its customers.

The green colour in the QB logo is Young and Friendly, indicating that QB products and services will be targeted at those young at heart and will be user-friendly. It also stands for vibrancy of the electronic payment world. The white in the logo represents the multiple possibilities and opportunities; white is the combination colour of all other light colours in the light spectrum. Blue stands for Being True and Having Integrity, meaning the products will provide good value to consumers and businesses and also transaction integrity.

As the exclusive business partner for non-transit payments and loyalty applications, to EZ-Link Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Land Transport Authority of Singapore, QB will exploit the convenience offered by the ez-link card to revolutionise electronic payment in non transit payment arena in Singapore. The card uses the CSC technology.

The QB Vision

Aligned to Singapore’s vision of becoming a cashless society through the use of e-cash and e-payment systems, QB aims to convert cash based transactions in Singapore onto the ez-link card. QB works with partners in Singapore and the region to bring together a seamless payment network, using contactless card technologies where appropriate.

Delivering the Vision

In Singapore, QB is working closely with commercial organisations, merchants, government organisations, and retailers to deliver the vision of entrenching the CSC as the preferred choice for consumer electronic payments, beginning with stored value purse transactions.

QB sees the potential of combining smart card technologies to efficient backend processing systems to enable payment and loyalty programme processing, time access activities, identification, authentication and authorisation, and data storage/capture. While new, QB has already begun venturing abroad and today offers early consultancy to project owners of smart card implementations in the region.

The ez-link Potential

Built on the Contactless Smart Card (CSC) technology, the ez-link card was launched in April 2002 to create a more efficient manner for millions of Singaporeans to pay for Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and public buses everyday.

Fast and secure, the versatile CSC technology can also be deployed for all small-ticket payment at points of transaction, debit and credit payment, loyalty points system, corporate security door access and many other card-based applications.

With already some 4.5 million cards in circulation as of April 2003, the ez-link card is the highest wallet penetration of any payment or non-payment related cards in Singapore. With this large user base, QB aims to work towards http://www.greendot-payment.com/html_version/ - down1

entrenching the ez-link card as the preferred payment mode in Singapore as it continues to develop as a cashless society.

PUBLIC EDUCATION TOUR

The President’s Challenge Objective

The President’s Challenge was created to get all people in Singapore to reach out and help those in need.

The President’s Challenge this year challenges Singaporeans to be "A Giving People, A Caring Nation" because "so many are helped when you reach out!"

The Objective of the Launch

The objective of the launch of President’s Challenge 2003 is to draw people’s attention to the mission and objectives of The President’s Challenge programme.

The evening’s programmes seek to:

  1. Articulate, simply and concisely, the aims of the President’s Challenge
  2. to inspire people to step up and help (by giving them reasons to act)
  3. to show people the avenues where help can be given, and who the beneficiaries are

The exhibition in the foyer will be viewed before the performance. It will tell people what the President’s Challenge is, and who benefits from it.

A performance has been devised to set the tone for a mindset change in the audience – to make them think, reflect, and decide to DO something for society. A poem has been written, which will be performed.

(A) President’s Challenge Exhibition

Aim:
The main purpose of the Exhibition is to educate the visitors on what the President's Challenge is all about. It is to create awareness of the President's Challenge and to help build its desired image and branding, thereby leading to greater community (both corporate and individual) participation and support.

Panels:
There will be two main panels each measuring about 2.5m in width and 3m in height. The panels can be used back to back. This means there will be four display walls for the four posters.

There will be two sets produced in the event that the exhibition is needed for two different events running concurrently. And/Or where space is not a constraint, the complete exhibition will be presented in running order along the four panels. This will be the presentation used for the official launch.

Presentation:

The main headings will be presented in the following order:

  1. A Challenge For All, A Responsibility We Share: panel to highlight PC, its mission, goals, objectives etc. To clearly define and brand the PC.
  2. A Giving People, A Caring Nation: panel highlighting beneficiaries, their strengths, their needs. The beneficiaries will cover children, teenagers, young adults, the handicapped and the aged. Info may spill over to panel 4.
  3. So Many Are Helped, When You Reach Out: panel will highlight on how beneficiaries have gained from community support.
  4. Are You Up to The Challenge: panel highlighting PC activities, how one can sign up and play an active role, where to participate or how to contribute $, after having a better understanding of The President's Challenge.
  5.

  6. Who Your Dollar Helps: All the beneficiaries will be listed on a stand alone penguin stand.

Exhibition tour and display:

Possible venues to display the exhibition will include shopping malls, Suntec City, PC events.

A list of venues and approval from their management committee for the display is currently being worked out and in all probability the exhibition will tour 30 venues from Jun to Sep.

This is to use the exhibition as one platform to encourage greater participation during the PC period and to give interested parties sufficient time to prepare for their event.

70 PC ambassadors have been recruited and will be scheduled to tour with the exhibition to communicate the goals of the challenge as well as to run quizzes so as to have a more interactive experience for the visitors.

(B) PCPE launch concert – 17 June 03

A poem was commissioned for PC and donated by Desmond Sim. It forms the central piece for the PCPE concert that will be staged by Project Chilli Padi the public education arm of Wild Rice.

The Objective of the Poem/ concert

The objective of the poem is to pose questions that face children and adults today. It concerns our future in this country.

The children in Singapore are its future. But our future generations live in troubled, worrying times. Our children see things on TV and experience a world that is less secure, more threatening. They want reassurance. But adults themselves do not have definitive answers to give the children. What is to be done? Do we sit in darkened rooms commiserating their fears… or do we act, so that we can have good reason to hope?

At the end of the poem, adults are told that they must step up… they must step out and help others. If they want their children to have hope in the future, they must show courage. For courage is not always a big heroic thing. It is a mother who will do anything for child with special needs – and all the people who pitch in to help her. It is a father doing his best to find or keep his job in the face of a truly difficult time – and all the people who pitch in to make employment possible in truly difficult times. It is a health worker who gets up to go to work - risking infection - even as another person is saved.

We have to have courage to step up and act beyond our comfort zones. Our children need our examples to follow. We must take up the President’s Challenge to help others who may need us to do something – simply because we can.
