PRESS RELEASE
Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister for the Environment, will lead a Singapore delegation to Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2 to 4 September 2002 for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
The Summit is held to review the progress of implementation of Agenda 21, a blue print on sustainable development that was adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit. The Summit will also seek to enhance co-operation on addressing new challenges that have emerged since 1992.
Heads of States/Governments, Ministers, and governmental representatives will adopt a plan of action that will set out action-oriented programmes to sustainable development challenges including poverty eradication, unsustainable consumption patterns, management of Earth’s natural resource base in the face of socio-economic progress. The gathering will also consider a declaration to reaffirm countries’ political commitment to sustainable development.
The Singapore Green Plan 2012 (SGP 2012) will be distributed at the Summit. Launched on 24 Aug 2002, SGP 2012 charts the strategic directions for Singapore’s environmental sustainability efforts over the next 10 years. It also underlines Singapore’s commitment to do her part for the global environment.
