Mr Fock Siew Wah, who has served as Chairman of LTA since the formation of the statutory board in September 1995, will complete his term of office on 31 August 2002. Mr Fock has been associated with land transport for more than 15 years. Prior to assuming the chairmanship of LTA, he was a Board Member of the former Mass Rapid Transit Corporation and subsequently the Chairman of SMRT for eight years from August 1987 to August 1995.
As Chairman of the newly formed LTA, Mr Fock charted the broad directions to achieve LTA’s plans and strategies as mapped out in the White Paper on Land Transport that was endorsed by Parliament in January 1996. Under his chairmanship, LTA has made good progress to deliver a quality and comprehensive land transport network as envisioned in the White Paper.
During the term of Mr Fock’s chairmanship, the rapid transit system (RTS) network was expanded with the completion of the Bukit Panjang Light Rapid Transit (LRT) System, the Changi Airport MRT Extension, and the soon to be completed North East Line and Sengkang LRT System.
The emphasis was to push for improvements in the public transport network, to increase its coverage in order to serve commuters better. At the same time, the capacity of the road network was also enhanced with road widening where feasible, use of technology to maximise capacity and the building of multi-tier interchanges to ease congested junctions.
Mr Fock has also been the driving force in LTA’s pursuit towards service excellence. A comprehensive one-stop portal for all land transport services was launched to allow the public to carry out vehicle related transactions on-line at any time of the day from the comfort of their homes and offices.
The Government wishes to place on record its appreciation to Mr Fock Siew Wah for his contributions towards the development of Singapore’s land transport system.
New Chairman, Mr Michael Lim Choo San
The newly appointed Chairman of LTA, Mr Michael Lim Choo San, who is currently the Executive Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Singapore, has always been a very active participant on the land transport scene. From 1991 to 1995, he was a Board Member of the former Mass Rapid Transit Corporation. He became a board member of the LTA when it was formed, and has been the Deputy Chairman since 15 October 2001.
Mr Lim is also very actively involved in public service. He was previously the Chairman of Tan Tock Seng Hospital from Sept 1996 to April 2000 and is currently the Chairman of the National Healthcare Group Pte Ltd. He is also a member of Public Service Commission, National Technological University (NTU) Council and Advisory Committee to the Nanyang Business School of NTU.
For his outstanding contributions to the public service, Mr Lim was conferred the Silver Medal Award in 1996 by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Singapore and the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) at the National Day Honours in 1998.
The LTA Board Members under the capable of leadership of Mr Michael Lim will provide valuable guidance and value add to the Authority in its challenging task of providing a quality, integrated and efficient land transport system in Singapore.
