PRESS RELEASE
JOBS @ CENTRAL FAIR ON 3 AUGUST 2002 OFFERS OVER 1600 VACANCIES
Over 1,600 blue and white-collar jobs will be offered at the Jobs @ Central Fair jointly organised by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Central Singapore Community Development Council (Central Singapore CDC). The event will be held on Saturday, 3 August 2002, from 1.00pm to 5.30pm at the atrium space at Toa Payoh HDB Hub (outside the Toa Payoh Bus Interchange). Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister of State (Education and Manpower) and MP for Bishan - Toa Payoh GRC, will be the Guest-of-Honour and will arrive at 1.15pm to tour the fair.
Twenty-eight hiring organisations from the services, IT and manufacturing sectors will offer positions such as managers, sales executives, technicians, clerks, production operators, cooks and CISCO Police Officers. Army 21 would also be at the event to conduct a recruitment exercise for Defence Executive Officers (DXOs).
The fair will also offer two additional value-added services for the residents. The first highlight is an exclusive session for pre-registered job-seeking residents to meet prospective employers before the start of the fair. The session will provide an opportunity for job seekers to interact with employers, who will be present to address their questions on the jobs on offer. With a better understanding of the job requirements and expectations, we hope that more residents will be placed successfully in jobs. As vacancies for the session are limited, interested residents should call 6370-9901 or e-mail the CDC at careers@centralsingapore.org if they have decided to register.
The second highlight of the event will be the launch of the Central Singapore CDC’s programme to encourage residents to take up employment in the home care sector. As part of this new initiative, the fair will showcase employment opportunities in the home care sector including those for cleaning jobs and confinement caregivers. There will also be speakers to provide interested residents an insight into the job of a confinement caregiver and the vacancies available in this sector. Eligible applicants for such jobs will receive training subsidies from the Central Singapore CDC under the MOM Train and Place Scheme.
The event, which is supported by the Singapore National Employers’ Federation (SNEF), the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), JobStreet.com, Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Development Group on Skills Training and various self-help groups, will also feature various training and skills upgrading programmes. Interested individuals can sign up on the spot for the Skills Redevelopment Programme and other training courses which will be offered by the NTUC and self-help groups like CDAC, MENDAKI and SINDA.
Since last year, MOM and the CDCs have been working with the support of our partners to co-organise monthly Community Job Fairs. We will continue to seek ways to bring together job seekers and job givers at the community level. Job seekers can look out for the series of job fairs planned for the rest of the year from our website at www.employmenttown.gov.sg and also in our press advertisements. Hiring companies interested in participating in the job fairs may contact the Ministry at Tel: 6 317 0628.
