PUBLIC GET FREE ONLINE ACCESS TO SINGAPORE STATUTES

- Launch of Singapore Statutes Online

The public can now have free online access to Singapore Statutes through the Singapore Statutes Online, an online service with the complete collection of all statutes of Singapore. This service is a joint initiative of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the Managing for Excellence Office (Ministry of Finance) and the Ministry of Law. It is developed and maintained by the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

The Government has always been committed to transparency and the rule of law as fundamentals of good governance. Giving our people easy access to our laws through Singapore Statutes Online underscores this commitment, through the provision of a "one-stop, non-stop" electronic public service, developed with the needs of the public in mind.

With the endorsement of the E-Government Policy Committee, Singapore Statutes Online was developed within a short period of 2 and a half months. By logging onto the Internet, any member of the public can have access to 425 statutes at absolutely no cost to them.

Prior to the introduction of this online service, the public had free access to 26 "popular" statutes through LawNet, a legal research portal managed by the Singapore Academy of Law. Examples of statutes available for free over LawNet are the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, Small Claims Tribunals Act, Computer Misuse Act, Electronic Transactions Act, Maintenance of Parents Act, Women's Charter and Intestate Succession Act. The public could also gain free access to recently published Acts and Bills through the Government E-Gazette maintained by SNP. Free access is however limited to 5 days after the publication of the particular Act or Bill. Free access to particular Acts was also available from the web-sites of the relevant ministry or statutory board administering the Act. For example, the Banking Act, Securities Industry Act, Futures Trading Act, Finance Companies Act and the Insurance Act can be accessed free of charge from the MAS web-site. But the complete set of statutes have not previously been located in one central searchable database for free access

Singapore Statutes Online can be accessed from the respective home pages of e-Citizen Centre (http://www.ecitizen.gov.sg), the Attorney-General’s Chambers (http://www.agc.gov.sg) and the Ministry of Law (http://www.minlaw.gov.sg).
