NEWS RELEASE
POLICE ADVICE FOR POLLING DAY
Voters are advised to walk or take public transport to their Polling Stations as parking of vehicles is not allowed within 100 metres of any Polling Station from 8 pm on 2 November to 8pm on 3 November. Holders of designated season parking lots that are cordoned off can park at adjacent public car parks during the period. Any vehicle found infringing this rule would be towed away. Its owner can contact Traffic Police at 1800 - 547 1818 to enquire about the status of the vehicle.
A vehicle conveying a sick, infirm or disabled person can stop or park within 100 metres of the Polling Station for a reasonable period for the person to cast a vote.
Police will be providing for appropriate security around Polling Stations. Bags and other belongings brought into the vicinity of Polling Stations will be subjected to checks. According to Section 82 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, no person is allowed to loiter within a radius of 200 metres of any Polling Station.
Counting Centres and the Announcement Centre
Counting Centres are not open to the public.
As mentioned in our news release of 27 October, the Announcement Centre is not open to candidates, their supporters or the general public. Election results will be broadcast ‘live’ over local television and radio from the Announcement Centre.
The parking of vehicles is not allowed in the immediate vicinity of the Counting Centres and the Announcement Centre. Any vehicle found infringing this rule would be towed away. Its owner can contact Traffic Police at 1800 - 547 1818 to enquire about the status of the vehicle.
Assembly Centres
As mentioned in our earlier news release of 27 October, political parties and independent candidates can set up Assembly Centres to await the announcement of the results with their supporters and members of the public. Screening of real time free-to-air public television and radio broadcasts will be allowed. Assembly Centres can operate from 8 pm on Polling Day to 30 minutes after the last result for the General Elections is announced.
As road traffic is expected to be heavy in the vicinity of Assembly Centres in the evenings, and parking spaces are limited, the public is advised to take public transport rather than drive if they are going to an Assembly Centre.
Supporters and members of the public are advised not to bring any object, implement or device (like sticks, rods, bottles, cans, hi-fi systems, or horns) that may be used to cause inconvenience, annoyance or injury to other persons at the gathering. In the event of inclement weather, the public is advised to bring raincoats instead of umbrellas.
The list of Assembly Centres, applied for by political parties and independent candidates and approved by the Police Liaison Officer (Elections), will be made known on the evenings of 1 Nov 2001 and 2 Nov 2001.
