MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT NEWS RELEASE

New Air Emission Standards for Industries

The Ministry of Environment (ENV) will be revising the air emission standards for industries listed under the Clean Air (Standards) Regulations, which have been in force since 1978. The revised air emission standards will be listed in a new legislation known as the Environmental Pollution Control (Air Impurities) Regulations 2001. The new Regulations will come into force on 1 Jan 2001 and they will replace the standards in the existing Clean Air (Standards) Regulations.

The revised standards will reduce the air emissions from industries and help ensure that our ambient air quality continue to remain good. A copy of the new standards is at the Annex.

Existing industries will be given a grace period of three years to ensure the air emissions from their equipment and processes comply with the revised standards. New industries and new equipment or processes introduced by existing industries will be required to comply with the revised standards from 1 Jan 2001 onwards. The new standards have been drawn up after extensive consultation with the industries and have taken into account developments in industrial processes and air pollution control technologies.

For enquiries or further information on the implementation of the Environmental Pollution Control (Air Impurities) Regulations and the revised air emission standards, the public may contact our officers from the Pollution Control Department at Tel nos. 7319672, 7319676 and 7319667.
