SPEECH BY DR RICHARD HU, MINISTER FOR FINANCE & MP FOR KRETA AYER - TANGLIN GRC AT THE OPENING OF YONG-EN CARE CENTRE AT BLK 335A, SMITH STREET ON SUNDAY, 26 NOV 2000 AT 11.30AM

One of the values enshrined in the Singapore 21 Vision is ‘active citizens". I am heartened to see active groups of individuals and organisations volunteering themselves to render care and compassion to the elderly people and to those who are less privileged in the community. This is evident in the tradition of the clans, religious organisations and ethnic groups to encourage active participation of members in providing valuable services to the community.

I commend Fairfield Methodist Church for setting up Yong-En Care Centre to cater for the residents in Kreta Ayer Division a range of caring and value-added services. Such services would help meet the needs of various sectors of the Chinatown community – children, youths, adults, parents as well as those home-bound and handicapped to cope with their physical, social and emotional difficulties. Providing preventive healthcare and healthy activities will prepare our senior citizens to age gracefully and responsibly. Encouraging students and residents participation in community work and volunteerism can enhance the Singapore dream of active citizens building a caring and courteous society.

Organised by Yong-En Care Centre, today’s event of "A Celebration with Our Community" gives evidence to Singapore’s value of building active citizens to care for the community by providing health check and to honour the senior citizens. The participation of Fairfield Methodist Church through the Yong-En Care Centre demonstrates the concern for the welfare and well-being of the residents in Chinatown. This too is the concern of our nation as a whole. With this facility, Yong-En Care Centre can provide better services and support for the Chinatown residents and community.

Best wishes and success in all your endeavours to serve the Chinatown community.

I now declare open the facility for Yong-En Care Centre.
