Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Statement, 5 Aug 2000: Singapore Scholarship Certificate Presentation Ceremony

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Ow Chin Hock presented certificates of award to 30 recipients of the Singapore Scholarship on 5 August 2000. These scholars are from the nine other ASEAN countries (see attached).

This is the second group of Singapore Scholars who will study at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University as undergraduate scholars during the academic year 2000/2001. These scholars were short-listed from a total of 300 applications that were received from the other nine ASEAN countries.

The Singapore Scholarship was announced by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong during the ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998. The scholarship seeks to assist young citizens in other ASEAN countries who may miss a chance for higher education as a result of the economic crisis. Singapore offered 28 scholarships last year and will continue to offer around 30 scholarships annually over the next two to three years.

The Singapore Scholarship is a Government-to-Government scheme without a bond imposed by the Singapore Government. Upon graduation, scholars are expected to return to their respective countries.
