PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, 1999

 

 

DATE OF ELECTION

 

1 The Presidential Election can be held at any time from 31st May 1999 but no later than 31st August 1999. The dates for Nomination and Polling Days will be announced in due course.

 

 

CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY

 

2 All presidential candidates must have a Certificate of Eligibility. Application for the Certificate may be made at any time from 31st May 1999. Application for the Certificate of Eligibility will close on the 3rd day after the Writ is issued. Application forms can be obtained from the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, Elections Department, 11 Prinsep Link, Singapore 187949, as follows:-

 

(a) Weekdays - 9.00 am to 5.00 pm

(b) Saturdays - 9.00 am to 1.00 pm

 

The office of the Secretary will be closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

 

 

  1. The Certificate of Eligibility shall state that for the purposes of the Presidential Election:-

 

(a) the Presidential Elections Committee is satisfied that the applicant is a person of integrity, good character and reputation; and

 

    1. where the person states that he desires to contest the election by virtue of being qualified under Article 19 (2) (g) (iv) of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, that the Committee is of the opinion that the person, having held office for a period of not less than 3 years in such position of seniority and responsibility in such organisation or department in the public or private sector as described in Article 19 (2) (g) (iv) of the Constitution, has such experience and ability in administering and managing the financial affairs so as to enable him to carry out effectively the functions and duties of the office of President.

  1. Members of the Presidential Elections Committee are:-

 

(a) Dr Andrew Chew - Chairman

Chairman of the Public Service Commission

 

(b) Mr Koh Cher Siang - Member

Chairman of the Public Accountants Board

 

(c) Mr H R Hochstadt - Member

A member of the Presidential Council

for Minority Rights nominated by the

Chairman of that Council pursuant to

Article 18 (2) (c) of the Constitution

 

Mr Lim Siam Kim, Chief Executive Officer of the National Heritage Board, is the Secretary.
