Press Release

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN PASSED UNDER NC-16

The Films and Publications Department has released the movie Saving Private Ryan under the NC-16 (No Admission to Children below 16) rating.

Saving Private Ryan is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Hanks and Matt Damon.

The NC-16 rating is meant for films that cannot be classified under PG (Parental Guidance) because their themes are unsuitable for children below 16 years.

FPD decided on the NC-16 rating for Saving Private Ryan because the theme in this film is war depicted with frank brutality, graphic scenes of violence and shocking language. As realistic portrayals are integral to the theme of war, these could not be removed from the film. A PG rating, therefore, could not apply, as such rating would allow young children access to distressing experiences unsuitable for them. It would also not be appropriate to classify the film under R (A), and limit it to adults.

FPD consulted the Films Advisory Panel before making the decision.

Saving Private Ryan is the first movie to be given the NC-16 rating under present censorship guidelines. The rating was recommended by the Censorship Review Committee in 1992. FPD will continue to assess all films submitted for censorship under these guidelines. NC-16 movies can be screened in all cinemas.
