In December 1996, the Ministry of Labour announced that the date for Deepavali in 1997 had been changed from 31 October 1997 to 30 October 1997 as advised by the Hindu Advisory Board.

2 The announcement was made after most calendars and diaries were printed. These calendars and diaries would still carry the old date of 31 October 1997 for Deepavali. The Ministry would like to remind the public that Deepavali for 1997 will fall on 30 October 1997 and not 31 October 1997.
