TDB ORGANISES SINGAPORE'S PARTICIPATION AT WORLD'S SECOND LARGEST FOOD FAIR

- Companies to Launch New Products in Paris -

The Singapore Trade Development Board (TDB) will lead thirteen local food and beverage manufacturers to take part in the SALON INTERNATIONAL DE L'ALIMENTATION (SIAL) 96, Paris, France, from 20 -24 October 1996. Five of the companies taking part are newcomers to the fair.

A list of the participating companies are attached in the Annex.

The SIAL Fair is reputably the second largest food fair in the world and is widely recognised as the key forum for all members of the agri-foodstuff industry. The biennial event features all kinds of food products, including dairy products, meat, seafood, fruits, confectionery, frozen food and canned food.

New lines of food products will be launched by the participating Singapore companies at the fair. These include cuttlefish balls, chikuwa, prawn and lobster balls, fish cakes, premixed sauce for convenience cooking such as nonya steam fish chilli sauce, sambal oelek, sambal belachan and and lemon sauce.

Apart from these, the Singapore companies also hope to promote 3-in-1 instant beverages and processed seafood at the fair.

Through Singapore's participation at the fair, TDB hopes to:

1. promote Singapore as a source for quality food and beverages;

2. promote Singapore food to international buyers from Africa, the EU, Middle East and US;

3. enable the participating food companies to make new contacts and look for local distributors for their products.

Singapore's Ambassador to France, Mr Foo Meng Tong, will pay a visit to the Singapore pavilion on 22 October 1996.

SINGAPORE FOOD INDUSTRY

Made-in-Singapore food and beverages have always been known for their good quality, hygiene and attractive packaging. Singapore food and beverage manufacturers have also established a reputation for prompt and on-time delivery of goods, reliable service and quick response to changing market demand.

Singapore's total trade in food and beverages has been registering a steady growth of two per cent over the past five years. The industry's vibrancy is reflected by the promising results of its latest trade performance. In 1995, Singapore's total trade registered S$11.9 billion, of which imports accounted for S$6.8 billion and exports, S$5.1 billion.

Japan, the US, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia have consistently been Singapore's top five largest export markets.

TDB has been helping to promote Singapore's export-oriented food and beverage industry in key markets and flagship exhibitions such as the SIAL Fair and Anuga Fair in Cologne.

Singapore's participation in SIAL Fair 96 is the sixth to be organised by TDB.
