Chap Singa was one of the earliest record labels established in Singapore. It was set up by Thomas Hemsley in 1937. Hemsley had previously been the manager of Chap Kuching, another early local record label. The record featured here contains parts 7 and 8 of “Babu Rosina”. The label states that this is a “Malay Drama” and the performance was by the Dean Opera Company. A newspaper advertisement from that time reveals that the performers included Miss Maimoon, Mr K. Dean, his wife Miss Tijah, and Miss Tijah’s elder sister Miss Salmah. Together, they were known as the “Big Four” of Malay bangsawan in the 1930s. The Dean Opera Company’s performance of Babu Rosina was also broadcasted on radio in 1938 and was performed in Bahasa Indonesia.
