  • Synopsis :

This is an interview (Part 1) on Soundscape and LAP 25 on 96.3FM in Mandarin that was broadcasted on 96.3FM at 7.30am.

    Summary on Soundscape:
    1. What is Soundscape?

As part of NAS’ on-going efforts to make archival materials more accessible and discoverable, NAS is launching Capturing Sights and Sounds of Singapore, a crowd-sourcing initiative which calls on the public to contribute sound recordings and photographs of the changing landscapes and soundscapes of Singapore.

Various familiar sights have disappeared with the advancement of time such as kampungs (villages). Street performances such as getai (Chinese opera) and live stage performances have also dwindled and are likely to disappear soon. With the introduction of self-ordering kiosks, we may also see the disappearance of ordering of drinks at coffee shops, etc. Through this initiative, we hope to collect and preserve the changing and evolving landscape and soundscape of Singapore for future generations of Singaporeans.

There are two parts to this initiative.

In April, we will be launching SoundscapeSG (http://www.nas.gov.sg/citizenarchivist/Soundscape), an initiative to build a sound map of Singapore. To capture the local sounds that are unique to Singapore and Singaporeans, NAS is looking to collect five distinct areas of Singapore’s changing soundscape, which include Festivals and Celebrations; Local Accents and Dialects; Nature and Wildlife; Sounds of the Heartlands and Sounds at the Workplace.

In September, we will launch Connect (http://www/nas.gov.sg/ConnectPhotographs), a project where members of the public can contribute photographs connected (or related) to the ones available on our Archives Online website (http://www.nas.gov.sg/archivesonline).

Members of the public can contribute their sound recordings and photographs on NAS’ online Citizen Archivist portal (www.nas.gov.sg/citizenarchivist/SoundScape).
