Synopsis :By 12 March 1988, Phases 1 and 1A of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system were opened, consisting of 20 stations on the North-South and East-West Lines. That same day, Mr Lee gave a speech at the system's official opening – which stressed the government’s commitment to the creation of an affordable, efficient, and comprehensive public transport system. He outlined how the system would integrate bus and rail networks and deliver world-class service to passengers, thereby providing Singaporeans with a stable transport infrastructure amidst challenges of land scarcity and congestion.
