  • Synopsis :

    1. Singapore: The Ministerial Salary Review Committee recommends the largest pay cut since ministers' salaries were pegged to the private sector in 1994. The new formula is based on the median salary of top 1,000 Singaporean earners, with a 40% discount. In a letter to the Committee, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says that the government intends to adopt the recommendations of the Committee.     2. Singapore: With the scrapping of the pension scheme under the ministerial salary review, political office holders appointed on or after 21 May 2011 will not receive any pension.     5. Singapore: Singtel 3G mobile connection remains unstable this morning. Singtel says that hardware fault that caused disruptions the night before had since been fixed, while current problems are due to a software issue. (00:21:27)

    6. Business News: Temasek Holdings is appointing former UBS Chief Financial Officer John Cryan as its European president. This is a newly created role suggesting that Temasek is looking at distressed assets in Europe. (00:24:53)  
         
    7. Business News: Hurt by declining new orders, Singapore's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) in December 2011 was 49.5. This is the sixth month in a row that the PMI has come in below 50. The corresponding index for the electronics sector came in at 49.7. (00:25:11)    

    8. US: Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the Iowa caucuses, beating former senator Rick Santorum by eight votes, to secure the nomination as Republican Party presidential candidate. (00:25:51)    

    9. China: Shanghai authorities have issued new regulations to prevent gutter oil from being passed off as cooking oil. (00:26:20)

    10. Vietnam: A Vietnamese man with a 90-kg tumour on his leg will be undergoing an operation to remove the tumour the following day. (00:26:42)

    11. Indonesia: Indonesians dumped more than 1,200 pairs of slippers at collection points across the country as a show of support for a 15-year-old boy who was beaten up by the police for stealing a police officer's sandals. (00:27:05)
