  • Synopsis :

    1. A report on the 1981 Philippine Presidential Election notes that the opposition has called for a nation-wide boycott of the Election in which 24 million Filipinos are eligible to vote. Contenders include President Ferdinand Marcos who has been in power for 16 years and his two main rivals, Alejo Santos of the Nacionalista Party and Bartolome Cabangbang of the Federalist Party. Official results are expected after four or five days.

    2. A report on the opening of the 6th ASEAN Standing Committee Meeting in Manila touches on a call by Philippine Foreign Minister Carlos Romulo on the people of  ASEAN to create a sense of togetherness and regional identity. Outside organisations and countries are interested in establishing formal links with ASEAN. According to Mr. Romulo, ASEAN must be responsive to its contemporary needs.

    3. At the opening of the 14th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines notes that events in Kampuchea and the bombing of nuclear reactors in Iraq are of concern to ASEAN. The grouping should celebrate unity and seek to strengthen its character and purpose. Lively cultural exchanges, expanded scientific interactions and arrangements for intra-ASEAN trade should be pursued. Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs S. Dhanabalan notes that ASEAN is prepared to work with Vietnam to promote economic growth in the country. It is up to Vietnam to respond instead of engaging in futile efforts to divide ASEAN. Ministers from other ASEAN countries also touch on the need to find solutions to problems in Kampuchea and Afghanistan and stress the importance of an upcoming UN International Conference on Kampuchea.
