  • Synopsis :

The programme looks at the role of the area around the Labrador Nature Reserve in Singapore's wartime history. In the 1800s, the British used this high vantage point to protect the harbour. During the 19th century, they  built the Pasir Panjang Fort which became part of the overall defence system for Singapore, complementing Fort Siloso in Sentosa. The underground complexes in the fort were used as a storage facility for British ammunition and supplies. During the Japanese Occupation, the Pasir Panjang Fort was closed and became inaccessible to the public. In 2001 two tunnels that stored artillery guns and other military structures were discovered and parts of the tunnels were opened to the public. Visitors to the tunnels, more accurately known as casemets, can learn about how the mostly Indian and Malay soldiers under a British commander manned the artillery positions until the end of the Battle for Singapore. Since 2002, ten hectares of the coastal secondary vegetation and the rocky shore in Labrador Park have been gazetted as a nature reserve.
