  • Synopsis :

In this programme, two Indonesian film critics tell us  why audiences, including former President B J Habibie and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono are flocking to see the Indonesian movie, 'Ayat-Ayat Cinta' or 'The Verses of Love'. Based on a novel of the same name by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, this romantic story is set in Egypt and filmed in Asia. It tells the story of a young Indonesian Muslim man called Fahri who  studies in Egypt and finds himself surrounded by four very different women who develop romantic feelings for him. The film examines issues such as polygamy, inter-faith marriage and the treatment of women in Islamic society. Critics feel that the film is popular because it is a crossover between melodrama and Islamic values although some parts are not in line with Islamic teachings. The movie has succeeded in reviving the local cinema industry by attracting a huge audience of Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
