  • Synopsis :

The fourth in a series of seven features on the Singapore General Election 2006. The programme looks at how issues like the proposal to build two integrated resorts in Singapore, the hiring of foreign talent amidst rising unemployment, the misuse of charitable funds by top officials in the National Kidney Foundation, new legislation to control online political expression and greater openess to public feedback will impact the outcome of the 2006 election. Analysts feel that government intervention in the National Kidney Foundation issue succeeded in restoring confidence in how charitable institutions are run. They also think that the casino issue might not be divisive as the electorate is aware of the economic benefits of opening the integrated resorts. Also, the government has put in place strategies to deal with problem gambling.
