  • Synopsis :

The second of a four part series of RSI Features on ASEAN in the new millenium  looks at the idea of e-ASEAN or electronic ASEAN first mooted by Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at the ASEAN Econonomic Leaders' Meeting in September 1999. Two months later at the ASEAN Leaders' Summit in Manila, the leaders endorsed a Task Force to study the proposal. Roberto Romulo, Chairman of the e-ASEAN Task Force speaks about a possible e-ASEAN Agreement on the use of information and communication technology to link the region closer together. Analysts also touch on potential implementation problems in countries like Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos where this mainly private sector intiative is likely to be state-controlled.
