Synopsis :The first of a two part feature on the 1999 Indonesian presidential election looks at the politics of electing a president in Indonesia. The People's Consultative Assembly or MPR General Assemby on 20 October 1999 will elect the country's next president. The candidates include incumbent B.J. Habibie of the Golkar party who lacks popular support, the highly respected Muslim cleric Abdurrahman Wahid who is leader of an alliance of Muslim parties known as the Middle Axis, and Megawati Sukarnoputri who failed to form coalitions despite her party PDI-P's decisive win in the June 1999 legislative election. The programme looks at the chances of these and other candidates of becoming president and the role of backroom deals, defections and money politics in the election process.
