  • Synopsis :

    1) Singapore's air quality hit a record high of seventy-three on the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI).
    2) More than forty schools offer Advance Elective Modules (AEMs) to students. Each of these AEMs last for forty hours. The earliest these modules will start is in October. As there are limited vacancies, students will be selected based on their capabilities and interests. Meanwhile, Ngee Ann Polytechnic will be launching the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Educational Studies and Leadership in 2007 in a collaboration with Wheelock College in Boston. Other colleges are also looking into collaborations with overseas universities to start bachelor courses.
    3) Maids can ask for their salaries to be paid into their bank accounts here. Maids' employment history have to be uploaded to the internet for employers and employment agencies to access.
    4) A company involved in timeshare resale will be the first to be slapped with a court injunction for breaching the Consumer Protection Fair Trading Act. This company refuse to sign the Voluntary Compliance Agreement.
    5) The trial involving the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) professor Bryan Ngoi Kok Ann embroiled in the alleged scam marriage of a Chinese national, Guo Juan wrapped up. In 2003, Ngoi sent an email to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority claiming Guo Juan was involved in a scam marriage. He alleged she was living with Lau Chee Khuen who 'acted' as her husband. When the case was picked up by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, Ngoi started giving false information. Later, investigators found out that Ngoi was withholding details.
    6) A survey showed that Singaporeans have low awareness of help services on gambling-related problems. One in two Singaporeans perceived 4D, Toto and Singapore Sweep as leisure and not gambling activities, while the majority considered table games, horse racing and slot machines as gambling activities. The National Council on Problem Gambling will continue to organise programmes to increase awareness on services for gambling-related problems.
    7) In Taiwan:
    - There is insufficient evidence to bring charges against Taiwan's First Lady Wu Shu-chen in the Sogo vouchers case.
    8) Taiwan Anti-Chen Round-the-Island March:
    - The parade was not allowed into Tainan City.
    - In Tainan, the supporters of President Chen and anti-Chen demonstrators shouted at one another.
    - As the parade moved into the southern part of Taiwan, it faced challenges from the supporters of President Chen.
    9) In Thailand:
    - Former army chief General Surayud Chulanont took office as the new Prime Minister.
    - New Prime Minister Surayud met up with United States Ambassador to Thailand Ralph Boyce.
    - New Interim Prime Minister Surayud paid his repsects to Buddhist monk His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara Somdet Phra Sangharaja.
    10) Thailand has completed its investigations into the sale of Shin Corp to Singapore's Temasek Holdings.
    11) Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said that he had no intention to meddle in Malaysian politics, nor does he have the power to influence Malaysia's politics. He reiterated that Singapore needs a strong government to maintain good relations with neighbouring countries. In a letter to Malaysia's Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, he said that UMNO leaders, including former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed, had publicly said that Malays in Singapore are marginalised and discriminated against.
    12) Seven pieces of artworks have been put up at Vivo City.
    13) China's largest man-made beach in Shanghai attracted ten thousand people a day. A dyke was built to keep the silt out and sea water is treated before it is pumped into the man-made lagoon. Sand also has to be regularly replenished as there is inadequate vegetation to prevent wind erosion.
    14) In Danang, Vietnam, Typhoon Xangsane destroyed numerous homes. In the central part of Vietnam which faces the sea, fifteen were killed and six hundred were injured.
    15) Trans fats which have been put into some fast foods are harmful to health. Even a small reduction in consumption can cut heart disease. However, if they were to be phased out, business may be affected.
    16) Singapore private residential prices rose 2.5 percent while the Housing and Development Board prices fell by 0.2 percent in the third quarter.
    17) The body of a man was found floating in the Singapore River.
    18) Singapore Sports Council hopes to be able to organise regional and international events and to start a talent identification programme.
    19) Golf: Tiger Woods won the American Express Championship.
