  • Synopsis :

    Recording is a BBC Newsreel update on the aftermath of the burning of the British Embassy in Jakarta. The several reports include:
    1. Introduction about: some 250 British women and children flown from Jakarta to Singapore; British ambassador telling Foreign Office, London, about the embassy staff's situation in a Jakarta police station;
    2. BBC Far East correspondent, Anthony Lawrence's report from Kuala Lumpur: it is a 'hard fact that Malaysia exists' and the people from the various territories come together 'out of their own free will'; Malaysian demonstrators at the Indonesia embassy in KL and Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman leading them away; the Tunku is ready to consider another summit meeting with Indonesia and the Philippines if it is held in KL;
    3. Peter Barnet reports from Jesselton on: North Borneo Chief Minister, Donald Stephens talking about more troops from Malaya at border with Kalimantan Utara and training of self-defence units, asking Sabah people to support the Tunku's stand against Indonesian aggression.
    4. In London, Foreign Secretary, Lord Hume asking for apology from Indonesia government for its attack on the British embassy and staff;
    5. Australian correspondents report from Canberra and Sydney on two other aspects of the Jakarta riots; Qantas official says rioting is more serious than reported;
    6. Report on first group of British evacuees' arrival in London, with excerpt of conversation with an embassy official's daughter;
    7. BBC's John Mascrow (sic) reports from Singapore about group of British and Australian women and children from Jakarta landing at RAF air terminal at Changi; excerpt of conversation with  British embassy female staff;
    8. BBC diplomatic staff, Daniel Coonahan, reports on the Indonesian ambassador being summoned twice to meet with Lord Hume;
    9. British government avoiding breaking off diplomatic relations with Indonesia but it is under 'active consideration' under the current circumstances.
