  • Synopsis :

Four segments covered in this programme:

    1.   Death Of Brezhnev   -   President Leonid Brezhnev died at age 75 on 10 november 1982. His death was announced the day after, on 11 November. Brezhnev ruled the Soviet Union for 18 years during which time he brought political stability to the country and kept the Warsaw Pact countries in tow. This segment profiles Brezhnev's political career and analyses his influence on domestic and international politics.

    2.    LDP Elections In Japan   -    Prime minister Zenko Suzuki's resignation threw up four contenders within his own party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), for the position. This segment examines the power-broking behind the contest.

    3.     Lobbing In The UN   -   The United Nations (UN) General Assembly endorsed by five more votes than last year, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-sponsored resolution on the situation in Democratic Kampuchea.  The results were due largely to the lobbying efforts of ASEAN diplomats. This segment looks at the lobbying process through the eyes of ASEAN's permanent representatives at the UN.

    4.     Supporting Industries   -   examines the various schemes announced recently by the Singapore Government to encourage supporting industries, so vital to the operations of MNCs here, to upgrade in order to keep pace with industrialisation efforts.
