  • Synopsis :

    1.  Singapore: All passengers departing and arriving from Singapore by sea will have their temperatures checked by thermal imaging scanners. (00:03:30)

    2.  Singapore: Member of Parliament (MP) of Ayer Rajah, Dr Tan Cheng Bock, is back at work after imposing a self-home quarantine when he discovered he has treated a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) patient. Dr Tan said that education is important to beat the stigma attached to those who have recovered from SARS. He is also pushing for screening centres to be set up outside polyclinics and hospitals.     3.  China: Nine deaths are reported, bringing the death toll to 148. 202 new cases are reported, bringing the total cases to 3 303. Japan and South Korea have issued travel advisories to their students in Beijing to return home due to the SARS outbreak. (00:07:38)

    4.  Iraq: 13 Iraqis are shot dead by troops during an anti-American protest. The killings are likely to inflame anger at American presence in Iraq. (00:08:02)

    5.  Iraq: United States (US) forces are holding former Iraqi oil minister who surrendered this morning. (00:08:49)

    6.  China: A court in China has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he set off bombs in two universities. (00:09:18)

    7.  Business: Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has entered into an agreement to sell its American Eagle Tankers (AET) unit to Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC). The price may be adjusted to account for changes in net assets and financial performance of AET. (00:13:52)

    8.  Business: Keppel Corporation reported strong increases in net profit and turnover due largely to its subsidiary petroleum companies in Singapore. Keppel Corporation said residential property developments in Singapore and China also contributed to the higher earnings. (00:14:27)

    9.  ASEAN: Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China leaders wrapped up a summit aimed to take concrete action to contain the SARS outbreak in the region. Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong said a two pronged approach is needed to contain the outbreak. (00:15:36)

    10.  Singapore: In his May Day Speech, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has urged Singaporeans to show their fighting spirit during this challenging time and to expect more unemployment as the full impact of SARS swings in. (00:18:09)

    12.  Singapore: All health supplements by Australia's Pan Pharmaceuticals will be taken off the shelves by tomorrow after Australian authorities recalled products there due to breaches in manufacturing procedures.     13.  Singapore: The Catholic priest who allegedly misused church funds is facing five new charges. He now faces 19 charges involving S$5.14 million in church funds. Prosecutors said there is evidence that he has bought properties in Malaysia and London for his own benefit. Bail has been raised to S$1.2 million. (00:24:38)

    14.  Singapore: Human bones have been found in the bushes in East Coast Park. Police have classified this as a case of unnatural death and have sent the bones for forensic examination. (00:25:11)
