Synopsis :Recording contains speeches by Dr Toh Chin Chye, Lim Chee Onn, Teh Cheang Wan at three separate functions.
1) Minister for Health Dr Toh Chin Chye gives a speech (in Chinese, English) before he officiates at the Re-appointment Ceremony for MC and WSCS at Rochore Community Centre (on 11/11/1979). He talks about community centres (CCs) in general and in particularl Rochore Constituency, pointing out they are a very important institution in Singapore, existing even before the PAP comes into office. In 1979 the CCs is still the focal point for disseminating civic consciousness, and helping to push forward campaigns by ministries. Talking about the committee members of Rochore CCs, he stresses there is no point being in committees if members do not carry out their responsibilities. He says the Manila CC and the Stamford CC are merged to form Queen's Street CC, but has warned the PA not to close down the Rochore CC, set up since 1959, long before the other CCs exist. (Duration: 00:31:34)
2) Secretary-General, NTUC Lim Chee Onn at the 1st Anniversay Celebration of Red Coral Restaurant, Cantonment Road (on 05/11/1979). He says the resaurant business is a risky and difficult enterprise. But he focuses on restructuring the economy, adding its success determines the future of Singapore and the people. To ensure restructuring succeeds, employers, government and union must cooperate and work together on the basis of mutual understanding, but it is everybody's business. He cites two examples of employers' being difficult, one over payment of 1979 NWC recommendation, and the other SILO/PIEU drive to encourage workers to donate blood. (Duration: 00:12:19)
3) Minister for National Development Teh Cheang Wan opens the Seminar on the "British Power Base Generation" at Shangri-La Hotel (on 11/11/1979). He talks about the impact of availability of cheap and abundance supply of energy and gloomy prospects. In Singapore PUB studies the feasibility of using alternate sources of energy in its new power stations. He stresses one measure all countries could take is to curb waste and conserve energy, which is of vital concern in Singapore. (Duration: 00:08:25)
