  • Synopsis :

Recording contains five speeches by Teh Cheang Wan, Hon Sui Sen, Lim Jit Poh, Dr Ahmad Mattar (two speeches) at four separate functions.

    1) Minister for National Development Teh Cheang Wan opens the NTUC Welcome Supermarket at Ang Mo Kio on 25/04/1979. He says this is the 11th NTUC WELCOME Supermarket to be opened. This is in line with the policy of the government to 'set aside accommodation' for a NTUC Supermarket in every new town as one of the most important services to residents is 'the availability of basic necessities at reasonable prices'.
    2) Minister for Finance Hon Sui Sen opens Mobil Oil Reformer (Singapore's New Reformer) at Jurong Refinery  on 27/04/1979. He says the two lessons Singapore could learn from the recent oil crisis are energy conservation and economic development. Singaporeans, he stresses,  must understand the economic equation. He emphasizes unless Singapore labour recognise the importance of correct work attitudes for economic development, the government's efforts to upgrade into higher technology and more capital intensive industries could be frustrated.
    3) Minister in charge of VITB and Chairman of VITB Dr Ahmad Mattar opens the Vocational Industrial Training Board (VITB) Headquarters at Ayer Rajah Road on 04/05/1979 and unveils the VITB logo and plaque to commemorate the occasion. First to speak is Lim Jit Poh. He talks about the role of the new VITB, established on 1 April with the merger of the Adult Education Board (AEB) and the Industrial Training Board. He urges the industrial, commercial and service sectors provide sponsorship of school leavers for training in the vocational institutes through offers of bursaries and scholarships. In his speech Dr Ahmad Mattar says the VITB is the 'new instrument of social and economic policy' to fulfil Singapore's new needs and cultivate a new breed of Singapore workers. He adds the vocational training takes place alongside the formal education framework.
    4) Acting Minister for Social Affairs Dr Ahmad Mattar at the Red Cross Party for the Aged held at Ming Palace Restaurant, Ming Court Hotel on 06/05/1979. He talks about the care of the aged sick, adding that Singapore is fortunate to have a well-developed system of voluntary welfare services which cater to the needs of the less fortunate members of the community.
