Synopsis :This tape contains 2 separate recordings. They are:
(a) Foreign Affairs Minister S. Rajaratnam's speech at the Singapore Malay Journalists Association's 24th Anniversary Dinner held on 24 Feb 1979 at Mandarin Hotel and the Association's Vice President Inche Salim Bidin's welcome address (in Malay and English).
Mr Rajaratnam discusses the relation between government and the press. He touches on:
- How to deal effectively with unduly difficult pressmen;
- Preliminary observations on the relation between politicians and journalists;
- The role of functional journalism;
- The role of Singapore's journalists;
- The need to modify the journalistic styles and aims of rich and developed countries to meet the requirements and objectives of Singapore;
- How the power of journalism has been misised in certain countries in Southeast Asia;
- The need for courageous journalists, not popular journalists.
(b) Mr Rajaratnam's press conferrence at Paya Lebar Airpot's VIP Room on 8 March 1979 after attending a Symopsium held in Japan to discuss ways in which Japan can co-operate with countries in South Asia and the Asia Pacific region.
