Synopsis :This recording from the Voice of America in Washington features the first of three nation-wide radio and television debates between President Gerald Ford and former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia, the Republican and Democratic candidates in the 1976 US Presidential Election.
The debate takes place at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and touches on domestic and economic issues. The two candidates are questioned by a panel of three news correspondents from ABC News, the Wall Street Journal and New Yorker magazine. The debate is moderated by Edwin Newman of the National Broadcasting Company.
In the debate, the candidates address a wide range of issues like reducing unemployment, tax cuts for middle income Americans, balancing the budget and amnesty or pardons for draft resistors. They also touch on the impact of reshaping the federal government by reviewing the number of people in the workforce, the use of nuclear power plants, a comprehensive energy programme and financing new initiatives in different areas like housing, health, recreational facilities and education.
