  • Synopsis :

    1) Rounding off the Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association's (SATA) 1974 Donation Draw Campaign, President Benjamin Sheares commends SATA for raising $77,500. He says that  tuberculosis, a constant threat to health is curable and preventable. The funds raised will help to meet rising operational costs.

    2) President Benjamin Sheares takes his oath of office as President of the Republic of Singapore, saying that he will faithfully discharge his duties to the best of his ability, bear true faith and allegiance to the Republic, and preserve, protect, and defend its Constitution.

    3) President Benjamin Sheares, who is Patron of the College of General Practitioners in Singapore says that in an era of over specialisation, there is a need for good  doctors trained in family medicine. He commends general practioners for upgrading their knowledge and says that there is a lot of scope for research in the field of general practice.

    4) At the official  opening of the Second Session of the Third Parliament, President Benjamin Sheares outlines the future work of the government in areas like economic growth, transport and crime prevention. He notes that external reserves have grown and urges MPs to be guided by the long term interests of all the people of Singapore.

    5) At a dinner of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Singapore, President Benjamin Sheares summarises the progress in this field in recent years. Delivery by caesarian section is today a safe procedure. Advancements have been made in the use of forceps and trained nurse midwifes help women who are about to deliver. Foetal abnormalities can now be detected and abortion has become an option for parents with afflicted foetuses.
