  • Synopsis :

At the opening of the mobile library service at MacPherson Community Centre, a spokesman notes that the idea of a mobile unit was first mooted by Health Minister Chua Sian Chin who was concerned about providing students, adolescents and residents with reading materials. Members of the MacPherson Community Centre brought this idea to fruition with the assistance of staff from the National Library. He is confident that residents will enjoy reading for pleasure and knowledge. In his speech, Health Minister and Member of Parliament for MacPherson Chua Sian Chin says that the mobile library service will provide another social amenity to the people of MacPherson. The library will visit the Community Centre every Wednesday. Adults and young people can borrow books from the four language streams. Mr. Chua notes that an internationally known economist who has been closely associated with Singapore's industrialisation programme has said that Singapore has the potential for providing expert services to the rest of Southeast Asia. The services envisaged range from management and financial consultancy to engineering and medicine. Singapore is already a centre for communications, trade and banking. As Singapore depends on its human resources, it must develop the brainpower of its people by raising educational standards and upgrading educational facilities. Hence it is vital to have a tradition of learning by nurturing in the young, a love for the acquisition of knowledge. This can be done by cultivating the reading habit from young. This library service will help to broaden mental horizons and raise intellectual standards. He then opens the mobile library service.
