  • Synopsis :

In his speech at the Annual Dinner of the University of Singapore's Economics Society, Malaysia's Finance Minister Tan Siew Sin focuses on the implementation of the Malaysian common market. He feels that the common market is a political and not just an economic proposition and notes that in the Malaysia Agreement, Singapore undertook to give a 150 million dollar loan for the economic development of the Borneo states in several  instalments. However, Singapore has yet to give any money for this. While the central government has recognised and alleviated the difficulties of Singapore manufacturers who want to sell their products in Malaysia, Singapore has imposed restrictions on imports from member states of the Federation. A similar product from Singapore can enter the rest of the Federation without such restrictions. In the final analysis, Mr Tan feels that the concept of a common market is far sighted and sound. However, its  implementation will require a willingness to give and take on the part of all concerned.  Otherwise, the common market  will result in greater friction between the central government and  the state government.
