Synopsis :This is a report on the historic signing of an agreement by Singapore, Malaya, North Borneo or Sabah, Sarawak and Britain to set up the Federation of Malaysia on 31 August 1963. After two weeks of talks in London, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew expresses satisfaction with the fair and just settlement to all in Malaysia. He explains that Singapore will pay 28% of her total revenue to the central government for various services, and the terms of the common market between Singapore and Malaya will be written into the constitution. Also, Singapore will lend up to $150 million to develop the Borneo territories at special interest rates instead of giving a $50 million grant which the Federation had requested from Singapore for developing unspecified states. Negotiations with British officials have settled the issue of land occupied by the War Department in Singapore. The Prime Ministers of Singapore, Malaya, Britain, and leaders from Sabah and Sarawak laud the signing of the agreement. Mr Lee stops in Cairo and Algiers on his return journey and bestows the Order of Temasek to the Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ben Bella. He comes home to a rousing welcome.
