Synopsis :This recording is a radio broadcast of an interview with Dr Tan Chee Beng, a social anthropologist in the Department of Chinese Studies in the University of Malaya and the author of ‘The Baba of Malacca’, on the history and features of the Peranakan culture. Dr Tan speaks of the emergence of the Peranakan in the region and differentiates between the Babas in Penang and those in Malacca & Singapore. He also discusses the features of the culture such as dressing and food, and how its amalgamation of the Malay and the Chinese positions it as a bridge between the two cultures.
