Synopsis :1) Welcome address by Chairman, International Herald Tribune (IHT) Conference.
2) PM Lee Kuan Yew's address at the IHT Conference in which he put forth the economic factors that must impinge upon and possibly determine the world's prosperity:
- The 2 major wars fought in Asia by US after World War II - The Korean War ('50-'53), Vietnam War ('65-'73);
- The results of these 2 major wars;
- China and her 4 modernisations in 1978;
- The launching of China's "Open-Door" policy in 1980;
- The lessons of free enterprise and free market;
- The "Pacific Century" in the 21st Century;
- The uncertain outlook for Asia in the 1970s after the Vietnam War;
- The current outlook for Asia in 1987 - peace, construction, more trade and competition for export market;
- The economic states of China, Vietnam and Japan;
- The average growth rates of various countries in East Asia and the ASEAN region from 1977 to 1986;
- Forecast of the future growth rates of various countries in East Asia and the ASEAN region;
- 3 riders which can upset the forecast:- (a) Ability of US to maintain fair and open trade; (b) Whether Japan will continue her low defence/posture, (c) Possible upset of the tenure of the US base in the Philippines;
- The stock market crash of October 1987 and the fear of a world recession;
- The effects of a recession on Japan and the ASEAN countries;
- The actions being taken by the Japanese to overcome their problems;
- The lop-sided pattern of trade;
- The need for US to take a long view of their present economic difficulty and allow for the adjustment to work through the world economy;
