Synopsis :1) Welcome speech by Dr Kwa Soon Bee, Director, Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
2) PM Lee Kuan Yew's speech at the opening of the new SGH on 12 September 1981:
- The reasons why PM Lee had mixed feelings in opening the new SGH;
- The oil crisis which started after the new SGH project was approved by Cabinet, and its impact on the project;
- The error of the planners and the hospital not adjusting immediately and thoroughly to a major change in basic circumstances such as the oil crisis;
- A call to find solutions to lessen the economic and the political costs of the project;
- How the health services can become more efficient through competition;
- Why there should be self-renewal principle in the medical profession, similar to that of self-renewal in the Government;
- How regular visits by overseas leading medical specialists can benefit the local medical professionals;
- PM Lee hoped that the opening of the new SGH would result in the opening of new vistas for Singapore.
