  • Synopsis :

The Al-Muttaqin Mosque in Ang Mo Kio was officially opened by the Member of Parliament for Geylang Serai Haji Rahmat Kenap on 21 September 1980. Among those present at the opening ceremony were Acting Minister for Social Affairs and Minister-in Charge-of Muslim Affairs Dr Ahmad Mattar and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Rahim Ishak. In a speech at the ceremony, an official says that this modern mosque will be a place not only for worship, but for learning more about the teachings of Islam. Its prayer hall can accommodate 1500 people. It also has a hall where seminars, conferences, Koran reading sessions, functions connected to religious festivals and other such activities can be held. Other facilities include a library, classrooms for self-improvement sessions, quarters for the Imam and an office. He thanks the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) which is the Singapore Islamic Religious Council for its decision to build this mosque in Ang Mo Kio as well as sponsors for their contributions to the mosque. Friday prayers will commence at the mosque on 26 September 1980 and they will be conducted by the Mufti of Singapore. Religious classes for adults and children will begin by January 1981. In his speech, MUIS President Ismail Said says that the Masjid Al-Muttaqin is the 5th mosque completed under the Mosque Building Fund Scheme. He congratulates the various parties who were involved in the building of the mosque. While Muslims in Ang Mo Kio should make good use of the facilities in this modern mosque, he hopes that those living in other parts of Singapore will also benefit from it both spiritually and for self improvement.
