Synopsis :At the Opening Ceremony of the Crime Prevention Campaign, the Chairman of the Campaign's Organising Committee says that the Campaign aims to familiarise members of the public with knowledge of common offences like housebreaking and theft, snatch thefts, pick pocketing and the theft of vehicles. They will also learn about methods to prevent these crimes.
The highlight of the Campaign is a crime prevention exhibition from 30 May to 6 June in which many aspects of crime prevention will be depicted. Eleven commercial firms and a local bank will participate in this exhibition. During the Campaign, senior police officers will deliver lectures on crime prevention in secondary schools. Radio, television and the newspapers will have special features on crime prevention.
The Commissioner of Police notes that although Singapore has a relatively low crime rate compared with other countries, there is no room for complacency. He hopes that the Campaign will result in continued public cooperation in law enforcement and crime prevention. Minister for Defence Mr Lim Kim San then says that he is encouraged by the growing interest amongst the population to help prevent crime.
Digressing from the Campaign, he explains the criteria for deferment from national service and gives the assurance that national servicemen who qualify for university admission will get a place in the University after full time NS. Mr Lim urges the public to learn more about crime prevention and assist the police in their work. He then declares the Crime Prevention Campaign open.
