  • Synopsis :

    This is a recording of a lecture delivered by Dr Png Poh Seng, a Lecturer of the Department of History at the University of Singapore. This lecture series is organised by the Joint Committee for Radio and TV courses. Dr Png speaks on the topic "Education And Social Change - Past and Present". In the first part, he discusses the educational and social changes that took place in Japan after her defeat in the Second World War and the factors that enabled Japan to emerge as a world power. In the second part, he provides a historical perspective to enable his audience to better understand and appreciate Singapore's educational problems. Dr Png also discusses the 6 functions that he would like the education system in Singapore to carry out in the attempt to bring about social changes. A Question-And-Answer session is held after Dr Png's lecture. A speech of introduction by the Chairman of the lecture series is recorded after the Q & A session.
