Synopsis :Minister of Finance Dr Goh Keng Swee gives a speech at the commemoration ceremony of Neptune Orient Lines' (NOL) brand-new ship, 'Neptune Aquamarine'. He focuses on the future plan of NOL, which he points out is Singapore's 'first venture at building up a modern mercantile marine fleet capable of competing with the best merchant shipping companies of the world'.
He finds it 'extraordinary' that Singapore founded on its potential value as a trading centre' its people should take '150 years to establish their own national shipping company'. He adds it would be 'wrong for the government to continue to be the sole owner' of NOL, rather its proftiability in the future should be shared with the 'citizens of Singapore and its customers - the shippers'. Speaking before Dr Goh are NOL's Chairman Hon Sui Sen and MD Captain Sayood.
