Synopsis :Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew delivered a speech "The New Generation We Want" at an event organised by the Queenstown Community Centre:
- Young generation should not merely be able to "read and write", they must also "think";
- Young population (50% are teenagers and babies) will in time to come determine the society we have;
- Lacking in number and size, we will make up in terms of quality;
- To breed a generation conscious of what it has got and what it should do to preserve and improve on what it has;
- Government provides "hard framework" that holds things together;
- Need to have a generation that is conscious of leadership and its responsibilities; prepared to stand up and die for the country;
- "Soft" generation must be changed through changes in schools (introduce extra mural activities);
- To make everyone a fighting digit in 20 years' time (1986);
- Government will provide the foundation;
- Best way to ensure enduring future is multi-racial society (tolerance to all group; give equal opportunity to everyone);
- How we solve multi-racial situation in Singapore will influence what happens in the rest of Southeast Asian countries with multi-racial problems (others will pick up lessons from our experience).
